Depending on who you ask, how to get from idea to publish is a very personal thing, because the answer will look different for everyone. I've been doing this since May 2022, and while I may not be a viral sensation (never my goal though), I have learned a few things along the way. Keep in mind that I do work full time and I don't have kids, so I have a bit more flexibility than most.
Don't force it. I let the characters dictate what I write next. I do my best work when I let this happen
At the same time, if you're feeling creatively burned out, take a break. A few days off will do far less harm than writing a story you didn't connect with
Balance. Pick the days I can't write because I'm doing Barre, or having a social life, and then plan my writing commitments around this
Find your tribe. Feedback from everyone that doesn't understand you, is relative. But feedback from your tribe is priceless
Don't be scared to try new things. Sometimes they won't work, and you learn from it and move on.
Stop comparing yourself to other writers success. Focus on your work because you can control that.
You're the boss and you make the rules. If you don't like something, change it
Understand your goals when writing and keep that front of mind at all times. For me, I strive to make bookish connections and that's something that's only become stronger since I started writing. Another goal is sharing what I've learned
Treat your book brand like a business. It's only as good at the energy you devote to it
Not everyone is going to like your books, and that's okay
Next year I will be going into my third year of writing, and with all the new series I have planned, I've never been more at peace with my journey, and I can't wait to see what I learn next.
